Don’t Let Your Finances Haunt You

October is the month of haunted houses, scary movies, and all things spooky. But there are a few things that can be even scarier than a haunted house: unexpected taxes, an underfunded retirement, and realizing you never updated your beneficiaries.

The good news? You don't need garlic, silver bullets, or a ghost hunter to keep these financial frights away. A little planning can go a long way.

1. The Ghost of “I’ll Do It Later”

One of the scariest financial phrases is: “I’ll get to it eventually.” Updating your beneficiaries, reviewing your retirement accounts, and increasing your 401(k) contribution. These tasks are easy to put off because they don't feel urgent until they are. Life changes quickly, and your financial plan should change with it.

This October, don't let the Ghost of “I'll Do It Later” follow you into another year. Take a little time to review the basics and make sure your financial plan still reflects where you are today. Sometimes the scariest financial mistakes are the ones we never got around to fixing.

2. The Vampire That Sucks Your Retirement Savings

Sometimes, it’s the small expenses that add up to the biggest financial scares. Subscriptions, dining out, shopping, and other everyday expenses can quietly drain your wallet, and before you know it, hundreds or even thousands of dollars have disappeared each month.

But there is one thing you don't want to overlook: your retirement savings. Take a look at your retirement contributions this fall. If you received a raise this year, consider increasing your contribution rather than letting your lifestyle automatically grow with your income. Even a small increase can make a meaningful difference over the course of a career. Increasing your contribution by just 1% or 2% annually may not feel like much today, but over 20 or 30 years, those additional dollars, along with potential investment growth, can really add up.

The goal isn't necessarily to save every extra dollar. It's about making sure some of your increased income is working toward your future instead of disappearing without you noticing. Don't let lifestyle creep become the vampire draining your retirement accounts.

3. The Web of “What If?”

Sometimes the scariest part of the future isn't knowing what will happen; it's being caught unprepared when the unexpected comes knocking. What if you retire earlier than expected? What if the market takes a downturn just as you're getting ready to retire? What if your income changes, you receive an inheritance, or an unexpected expense comes along?

You don't need to predict every twist and turn. You need a plan that can adjust as your life changes and the unexpected happens. That's why staying in touch with your financial advisor matters. It should evolve as your life and goals change. Regular conversations keep you focused on the bigger picture before a financial surprise turns into a financial scare. You can't predict the future, but with the right plan, you can be better prepared for it.

No Tricks. Just a Better Plan.

Halloween is a good reminder that some things are worth being prepared for. Your financial future doesn't have to be scary. Whether you're preparing for retirement or simply making the most of your money, having a plan can make the road ahead clearer. This October, skip the financial tricks and give yourself a treat: Take a fresh look at your financial plan.
